Planet in the Distance
Working with maps and airial views of the earth Josh created Elevations 1. A 24 piece Cosmic Cloud mural. A multi fired process to create textures and organic glaze blending helped create this work. It is available for purchase. Contact Josh if you are interested.
Saturn Ring Swing 26" x 26" is was created with the mindset of making an Orb but I decided to keep it in a square format. The rings are attached clay ribbons. Each strip on each tile is glazed with a different color. The color could be used only once per 8" x 8" tile. Using Marshmallow as the background I am experimenting with a new color palette. If you are interested in a custom piece contact Josh to discuss ideas.
Ebb and Flow is a work of complex patterning and bas relief, twisting and turning throughout the 4' x 3' surface. See each individual tile documented on Josh's Facebook page; click here to see how it was made, from start to finish. If you are interested in a custom piece contact Josh to discuss ideas.
Art-Nouveau Quilt was inspired by wallpaper designs of the 1920s. While wallpaper patterns are generally more formal, these tiles are interconnected via richly colored glazes and 3D impressions to create an organic, overall design. This work was commissioned to fit a specific niche in the client's home. If you are interested in a custom piece contact Josh to discuss ideas.
Simplicity of form with variation reveals the abstract nature of a glaze, allowing the viewer to see forms that resemble real images. Taking natural plants, like barley, and then enlarging the small plant form up to a 32" x 54" mural allows the viewer to really explore the beauty of the glazes. Viewing the work from a distance further enhances the resulting graphic image. This piece is in a private collection. If you are interested in a custom piece contact Josh to discuss ideas.
Many Cosmic murals are commissions for specific spaces. Arched Swirl was made to fill the arched space over a fireplace. This piece was the inspiration for many more shaped Cosmic murals. If you are interested in a custom piece contact Josh to discuss ideas.
Space Fiddle was inspired by the work of Karl Blossfeldt, a German Photographer (1865-1932). Botanics have wonderful patterns and forms to be captured in clay and glazes. If you are interested in a custom piece contact Josh to discuss ideas.
Cosmic Antenna is a playful work of interesting forms reminding viewers of animals, insects and plant life. The piece is 3' x 4'. If you are interested in a custom piece contact Josh to discuss ideas.
Cosmic Ring Swing 25" x 25". Experimenting with some new colors and design concept Josh painted each of the raised rings a different colors in each of the 9 tiles creating a swirling effect. Over 10 colors used.
Super Nova is 31" x 31". The ring around the edges are actual holes going through the clay. So you could say this super nova is see through to other universes! I glazed this pieces after looking at wallpaper designs. Using looping gestures to create the lines and filling in the loop spaces with every color in my studio. A wonderful effect.
Hex Nebula has many optical illusions to it. (How many shapes can you find?) It was fired multilple times to get the finished glaze effects. The piece is 43" x 32" and is available to purchase for $1320. Contact Josh if you are interested in more info.
Steamer Planet is a dimensional, 36" round Cosmic. Multiple bas relief textures ripple through the piece.
Cosmic Compression was created by adding multiple glazes compressed next to each other in thick rows. The colors blend a little with each other but hold their form. When firing in the kiln, the glazes melt together to create auras, new color blends and fabulous patterning.
Nova Planet is made up of 32, 6" x 6" textured tiles, with 1 inch between each piece. The inspiration for this work was aerial photography and space images.
Ripple Planet is 32" x 32". It is made using impressions pressed into the surface, creating a rippling bas-relief effect through the piece.
