Here are more photos of canes being made.

Most of Layl's canes are about 6 inches in diameter and 10 inches tall though she has made much larger and smaller canes.

Each cane takes anywhere from 10 to 40 hours to make depending on how detailed they are and how soft the clay is.

Layl makes about one large cane a week plus multiple small canes.

Smiling Sam the Snowman before being reduced.

The end of the cane gradually

gets smaller.  The trick is to

keep this flat and squeeze the

diameter down.

Parts of the design tend to creep over the edge so I try to push it back over to the bottom.

Here is another view of squeezing

the ends.

On Smiling Sam- even the very

end is still pretty good because the design is mosly in the middle of the cane.

Here is the whole cane all stretched out.  The two little chunks in the front are all the "scrap" clay I ended up with.  (But I'll still use it on my sculptural pieces in some way or another)
Cardinal Cane ready to reduce.  It was about the same size as Smiley Sam Orange Kitty with Stars ready to reduce. Clementine Cat ready to reduce. This one was about the same size as Smiley Sam.

This Purple Aligator was a special order for a customer down in New Orleans.  He custom ordered ten canes with themes that related to New Orleans.
